First Parish: Active in the World
At FP Milton, we strive to “Grow Deep Faith and Take Bold Action”
Some of our activities over the past 10 years include:
● Father Bill’s Place: preparing and serving meals to homeless folks in the nearby town of Quincy
● Handcrafting Justice Fair Trade Sale: annual holiday tradition selling fair trade goods at church to support women in developing countries
● Holiday Gift Program for children in the families served by the Milton Resident's Fund
● Jericho Road Project: providing leadership, startup funding, and steering committee membership for the founding of this new project for nonprofit capacity-building in Roxbury
● Katrina Recovery Work Groups: organized by First Parish, two groups of volunteers went to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina to assist with rebuilding
● Milton Food Pantry: food drives serving residents of Milton
● Milton Interfaith Refugee Assistance: support of interfaith organization providing settlement assistance for incoming refugees
● Milton Residents Fund, Parish Members Fund, and Martin Swift Funds: Under the direction of the Trustees of the Parish Funds and administered by our social worker, these three funds each year provide approximately $200,000 of financial assistance to Milton residents in need.
● Mother’s Day Walk for Peace: annual participation in and fundraising for the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute in Dorchester, which supports families of violence victims and promotes peace education in the Boston schools
● Occupy Boston: provided meals and support to occupiers in downtown Boston
● Pride Boston: annual march for LGBTQ awareness and support
● Renewal House: Mother’s Day gift drives and meals prepared for residents of a domestic violence shelter run by the UU Urban Ministry
● Small Group Ministries such as Luminaria, a capella singers for the terminally ill
